Queen Charlotte Islands
British Columbia, Canada

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve in the Queen Charlotte Islands is a place of unique natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and the home of the Haida people. Nutrient rich water welling up from deep in the Pacific support a large population of plankton which in turn support the abundant and diverse wildlife of the area. This wilderness has old growth temperate rainforest, steep rocky coast lines, sheltered bays, open ocean, and the San Christoval Mountains rising 1,123 meters (3684 feet) from the sea. This is an amazing place for watching birds, whales, and intertidal life or hiking in the quiet moss covered old growth forests, visiting one of the abandoned Haida village sites, or just relaxing and enjoying the slow pace of a day in the wilderness. It is also a great place for photography with an amazing diversity of inspiring subjects.

We make two to three shore excursions for various activities each day. Our evenings are spent in safe & scenic anchorages that we rarely have to share with other vessels.

Although there are several 'can't miss' places we usually visit each trip, no two voyages have ever been the same.
Keeping that in mind, a typical itinerary follows:

Day 1:
There is an afternoon flight to Sandspit from Vancouver. Upon arrival, transfer has been arranged to your Bed & Breakfast, or to Copper Sky on some sailings.

Local options include:

  • Visit nearby village of Skidegate for the Haida museum and dinner option, or, relax and watch eagles on the beach from your front porch. You can always stay over an extra day or two before or after your tour, and do a walkabout then.

  • Day 2-7/9:
Transfer to Copper Sky by 800 AM and join us in our continuing exploration of Gwaii Haanas, a 577 square mile wilderness reserve. Here-
  • You will find no roads, marinas, fuel docks, towns, resorts, or other human habitation, other than two Parks Canada cabins, and three houses at the old whaling station in Rose Harbor.
  • You can beach-comb, photograph, read, paddle, walk, write, hike, tide-pool, think, soak in scenic hot springs, fish, sail, sketch, snorkel, contemplate, look at marine life through a glass bottom bucket, catch crabs, mess about in our small boats, & observe an incredible assortment of wildlife.
  • Enjoy the company of interesting and unique shipmates, tasty meals, and dedicated crew.
  • Visit the totems and longhouses of Haida culture at Nan Sdins, Tanu and Cumshewa.
  • During your cruise, you can expect to see birds numbering in thousands, and more than forty species including Tufted Puffin, Red Throated Loon, Great Blue Heron, Harlequin Duck, Peregrine Falcon, Red Necked Grebe, Sandhill Crane, and hundreds of Bald Eagles.
  • For a list of wildlife species we find, please visit our birding website by forest ecologist and wildlife photographer David Blevins.
  • View whale watching and other photos by wildlife photographer John Marriot.
